Ma sangostu akramani
(without succumbing to inaction)

Spirituality And Health

One often confuses spirituality with religion, but apparently they are different. Religious practice depends on faith and belief, but does such practice make one spiritual ?

'Spiritual' essentially refers to a healthy state of mind irrespective to one's religion, priest, class, caste or profession, social status etc.

A spiritual person is one who has qualities like :

  1. Simplicity
  2. Cheerful
  3. Contended
  4. Courages
  5. Justice
  6. Helpful without expectation
  7. Honesty
  8. Keeping one's words
  9. Physically active
  10. Generous deeds
In "Ayurveda" there is a comprehensive term for health which is " Swasthya" It means to be established "sthit " or to be in equilibrium with oneself. "swa". The equilibrium is anticipated  in the

  • Physiological
  • Tissue metabolic and
  • Excretory functions

Sama Dosha
Sama Dhatu
Sama Agni
Sama Mala Kriya

and equally important charecteristic of health is "Contentment" at mental level (
prasan :
indriya,
manas and
atman )
Body, mind and Soul

In Yoga knowledge system enunciated in classical text like Patanjali, the explanation and understanding of physical and mental health is much deeper because human being is said to  comprise of Five interconnected layer of simultaneous existence. These are Anna maya kisa
Prana maya Kosha
Mano maya Kosha
Vigyanamaya Kosha and
Anand maya Kosha

Our external body form is the Ann maya kosha, made of food. In these five layered view, the physical form is a product of one's physiological and genetic make up, diet, exercise and environment. The meta -physical state which influence the Ann maya kosha are four fold, In modern psychology, these four states may be correlated to the sources of human conciousness.

In the Yoga knowledge system, the  the mind is metaphysical and distinct from the brain. A deeply spiritual person is defined as one who has discovered and experienced  beyond  the physical state, the four other state of  prana maya kosha, mano maya kosha, vignyan maya kosa and anand maya kosha. So in yoga tradition, one calls that person deeply spiritual who has actually experienced all his five interconnected layers of being.
